Tribute to Hans Josephsohn (Königsberg, 1920 – Zurich, 2012) on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St. Gallen, presents a selection of brass sculptures made between 1950 and 2006, without pretending to retrospectively trace the sculptor’s entire career. The works presented at MASI well exemplify the centrality of the human figure in Josephsohn’s artistic research and document all the typologies in which the artist himself cataloged his work: standing, seated, reclining figures, half figures and reliefs. Although the starting point for his sculptures are real models – mainly female, identified in the circle of friends and relatives – Josephsohn’s work shuns a realistic approach by privileging immediacy and vivacity, emphasizing anatomical elements and adding different points of view that make it difficult to identify the frontality of the sculpture. The installation, designed by the Kesselhaus Josephsohn in St. Gallen, deliberately presents a provisional, unfinished aspect, which is well suited to the immediacy typical of the sculptures presented.

250TH ANNIVERSARY: BEETHOVEN’S WORLD

Free but pre- reservation required

Talking about Beethoven and celebrating his anniversary, but for once doing it by playing as little of his music as possible, but other music: those that he studied, read or listened to, and which certainly influenced him – from the “great” Bach to Mozart, from the “young” Bach (Carl Philipp Emanuel) to Haydn – and then the music whose style shows no small affinity – those of names that are not very popular today such as Pleyel, Méhul, Gossec. And again, the Diabelli Variations, the music of the Revolution, those of Germany, those of popular culture, in short: that world of sounds in which Beethoven’s is formed and defined. A galaxy like this, proposed in some cases in complete form, in others by fragments – live, on the piano, with short extracts of symphonic recordings – is at the center of the meeting with Alfonso Alberti, who between music and words makes us better know the composer and his musical world. PARCO SCHERRER

An extraordinary trip through time and space, where past and present, history and nature co-exist in perfect harmony.

In 1930 a little old house with a stable overlooked by vineyards and a chestnut grove stood on the shore of Lake Lugano, at the foot of Mount Arbostora. Arthur Scherrer, a passionate gardener, bought the house at that time, and also the land above it, hillside after hillside. First of all he oversaw the renovation of the house, transforming it into a magnificent residence with great architectural taste and over the years he created his “Garden of Wonders”. The slopes and terracing are covered in cypresses, camellias, camphor, eucalyptus trees, cedars, monkey puzzle trees, palms and bamboo Woods, all exotic, Oriental plants which Scherrer had admired during his travels abroad for work. Inspired by Oriental landscapes and cultures, he didn’t merely reproduce the fascinating vegetation he encountered. Year after year, he reproduced a number of reduced scale temples from the Mediterranean world and exotic, distant countries. In fact, the Park includes two areas, with two main styles: Mediterranean and Asian. The route firstly goes through Mediterranean garden terracing in the Renaissance and baroque styles, with an abundance of statues. It then continues through bamboo groves in the Oriental landscape which is quite astonishing due to the presence of Siamese, Arab and Indian constructions, together with the flora typifying these regions. From the Park it is possible to admire the landscape over the Italian side of Lake Lugano, the Varese hills and the Po Valley.
